Lochwood Castle,
 

 

Lochwood castle was the fortified residence of the Johnstone family of Annandale, from the 12th to early 18th Century.  The 15th century 'L' plan tower remains only to the 1st floor.
 


The tower was captured and occupied by the English in 1547 to 1550. They described it as a "A fair large tower, able to lodge all our company safely .  In 1585 the tower was attacked and burnt by the maxwells.
 

Situated in an ancient plantation with good examples of pollarding. Some of the trees are over 400 years old.


 located approx. 3.5 miles south of Beattock just off the road from Lochmaben to Beattock.
