Built in 1582 by Sir Thomas MacLellan of
Bombie to an L-shaped plan. It was not built as a defensive castle but more
as a fortified house. The kitchen has a vaulted ceiling and a hearth which measures approx 14 ft(3.3 m). MacLellan's coat of arms, and those of his wives, are displayed over the entrance. There is a large fireplace (Approx 11feet 2.6 m long) In is a "lairds lug" (spy hole) from which the watcher can see and hear what is happening in the main hall. The castle passed into the possession of the Maxwells od Orchardton, who took the roof off and stripped the castle of its contents. The ruin was then sold in 1782 to the Earl of Selkirk.
