Lochmaben is a royal Borough approx. four miles west of Lockerbie is hemmed in by three lochs, Castle Loch, Kirk Loch, and Mill Loch. Described,in 1827 as the poorest Royal Burgh in Southern Scotland.


Notes

1863 a station opened the branch railway from Lockerbie to Dumfries, now closed.
Lochbank: Iron Age ?Woody Fort? near Mill Loch and Upper Loch. Traces of Roman road.
Protected area of wetlands that includes Blind Lochs, Mill Loch and Upper Loch.
Mercat Cross: Now in Princess St Gardens. Sundials on the faces of the top block.

Lochmaben Castles
List of Castles in Scotland
Lochmaben dates back to at least the building of a castle by the Bruce family in the 1160s. and was probably dismantled, in the 1300's. The Motte is close to Kirk Loch,on the 14th tee of the Golf club.
The later castle, built at the southern end of Castle Loch by Edward I of England around the 1300's.
