Lochwood (Site of Special Scientific Interest) Remarkably atmospheric, with ferns and Many of the trees have ferns and moss growing on them.
An ancient plantation with good examples of pollarding.Some of the trees are over 400 years old.



Notes

located approx. 3.5 miles south of Beattock just off the road from Lochmaben to Beattock.

Laybye for parking
The Motte is fully accesible.
Small parking bay near Lochwood Tower. Pollarding:-The tops of the trees are cut off allowing new growth just above the reach of animals.
The tower is l-plan type and it is thought it was built in the late 15th earl 16th century.Has remains of Tower House and an Motte.
The original motte and bailey was rebuilt and extended several times,it became one of the most important strongholds in the west march, until the castle was built next to it. The remains are not accesible but can be viewed from the road.
Only the ground floor and basement. This tower has a basement and prison.
