Main Street of the village of New Abbey lies at the foot of Criffel A river, the New Abbey Pow flows into the estuary of the River Nith. A Cistercian abbey was founded here by Lady Devorgilla in 1273. She was buried with his heart alongside her in what known as New Abbey now Sweetheart Abbey.
