Annan, a former former royal burgh, is a market town standing on the River Annan in Dumfries and Galloway. The River Annan was navigable to Annan bridge for vessels up to 300 tons. Smaller vessels could carry on a little further.
When the railway, when completed it enabled the town to transport cattle, sheep, grain cotton goods,and ropes etc. to England.
There were also a thriving local shipbuilding business building Coastal brigs,schooners and tea clippers. The harbor was also used to transport passengers and goods to the USA and Canada, but is silted and almost dry now, though the odd boat remains.

The railway turntable was developed here.
On the key in the, silted harbor, there is a cairn dedicated to Robert Burns, who was an exciseman here in the 1790s.
