Situated on the edge of the river Dee, Kirkcudbright is first recorded with Royal Burgh status in 1455.
In 1453 Kirkcudbright became a Royal burgh, From around 1570, Sir Thomas Maclellan of Bombie, the chief magistrate, received a charter MacLellans Castle, built on the site.
During World War II a training area for the D Day invasion.Which still remains today for live-firing exercises.
