Only the foundations of the first castle started by Sir John Maxwell, 1231-1233, remain. This was one of the earliest stone castles in Scotland.
The early castle was abandoned and Sir Johns brother Sir Aymer Maxwell began construction of the present castle, was completed when Herbert Maxwell, nephew of John Maxwell, occupied it.
